Today we did an inquiry/drama lesson and we mummified a "human body". Whaea Bobbie had traced around her son Quaid twice. She then stuck the two bits together and stuffed the inside with shredded paper.
We then acted out the process of mummification. We pulled out the vital organs and put them in canopic jars. After that we stuck special items on our mummy for him to carry into the afterlife. We then wrapped our body in bandages. After that we painted PVA glue onto the bandages - this acted as the resin.
Next week we will build our mummy a sarcophagus.

Mummifying Apples
Today Rakiura continued with their science and inquiry work. Each student mummified an apple! We took an apple each and carved a face into it. After that we put it in a jar along with 1/2 cup of baking soda and 1/4 cup of salt. We then rolled our apple around in the mixture. Once we had done that we labelled our jar and put a lid on top.
We had to make some observations about what our apple looked like, weighed and how big it was (width and height). We will check on our apples every few days and update our observations.
We also had to make a hypothesis about what we think would happen.
Feel free to come check out our apples! They are in the sink area in Whaea Bobbie's room.

ANZAC Writing
Be sure to come in and check out our amazing ANZAC writing display in our cloak-bay. We had to pretend we were soldiers or nurses who were writing home to their families. We watched some videos and read some descriptions of what it was like to be in war. We also listened to some clips of the sounds that soldiers and nurses might hear.
After we had got some inspiration we wrote our drafts and then we published our pieces. We also tea-stained our work to make it look dated. You can see there are poppies around our writing too, we also made those.

Ancient Egyptian Foods
Yesterday Whaea Bobbie brought in 23 different types of foods they would have cooked with in Ancient Egyptian times. We had to go around and use our senses of sight and smell to try and figure out what each food was. It was a very fun activity and we were surprised by how similar some of their foods were to what we eat today.
Whaea Bobbie had also made an Egyptian cake over the weekend. It was a bit heavier than some of the cakes we eat today but it was still very yummy! Thank you for such a great lesson Whaea Bobbie!

The Science of Bread Making
Yesterday Rakiura made bread as part of our science work. We followed a traditional European bread recipe and next week we will try a more Egyptian recipe to link into our inquiry unit (on Ancient Egypt).
All the children worked very hard, kneading their bread and then shaping it into something beautiful. We had traditional bread rolls, braids and even a snail!
